Here's an idea . . . . .

There is much in the UK news currently about the budget and what Rachel Reeves may or may not do and certainly rumours would have us believe that she has the middle classes firmly in her sights but for me it rather begs a different question - why don’t we tax the fabulously rich harder? I mean if you earn over £1 million a year a 1% rise is only £10,000 - the equivalent of two Dior dresses or considerably less than the depreciation on their cars - and a million is not even the big bucks in today’s standards!
I can’t see that it takes much budgeting for them to find that (although people generally live up to their incomes) but I think I would be aiming at the people who have so much money they have to work at spending it rather than stashing it in offshore accounts. Not that long ago I saw a very good video that showed the difference that could be made distributing money to ordinary people (who generally spend it in their local economy) and giving the same amount to one ‘rich’ person (who invested it or saved it as they didn’t need the money).

The argument is always that they will leave the country and take their money with them or that, because they can afford to pay a good accountant, they don’t actually pay much tax anyway. So, here’s my idea - make very rich people have counselling so that they stop equating their self worth with the number of zeros in their bank balance. More money doesn’t equate to more happiness and wellbeing probably because of the pressure to stay at the top or the energy required to caretake all the ‘stuff’ required in order to make sure that people know you are fabulously wealthy. Even ordinary people generally have too much stuff judging by the decluttering videos I find in my feed! Let’s make conspicuous wealth so last year - especially when over 1 in 5 people (read that again and that’s in the UK) live in poverty.
Let’s make paying tax your tax bill something worth bragging about and fund a better Britain!
And if someone feels that I have no idea what its like to be fabulously rich and I don’t know what I’m talking about I am quite up for them gifting me squillions in order to write more intelligently on the subject - just saying!
