So the more I started to think about AI the more I wanted to take a look so I asked it to:-

“Write a 500 word article on what the world of work will look like in 10 years”

This is what it wrote:-

The World of Work in 2034: A Symbiosis of Human and Machine

A decade from now, the world of work will be unrecognisable from its 2024 counterpart. Driven by the relentless acceleration of artificial intelligence, demographic shifts, and a fundamental re-evaluation of the purpose of work, the office of 2034 will be a fluid, dynamic, and deeply human-centric environment—albeit one powered by silicon.

The most profound shift will be the maturation of AI from a tool to a ubiquitous collaborator. AI won’t just automate routine tasks; it will augment human intelligence. We will move from giving computers commands to having conversations with them. Professionals will leverage AI “co-pilots” for everything from generating strategic models and legal briefs to designing marketing campaigns and diagnosing complex medical data. This will elevate the value of intrinsically human skills: critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, and ethical judgement. The most sought-after employees won’t be those who know the most, but those who can ask the best questions of their AI counterparts and interpret the answers with wisdom and context.

This technological shift will dissolve the traditional boundaries of the “office.” The hybrid model will evolve into a truly distributed and asynchronous workforce. Immersive technologies like augmented and virtual reality will create “virtual headquarters,” where teams from across the globe can collaborate on 3D models or conduct meetings as lifelike avatars, making geography irrelevant. The focus will shift from hours logged at a desk to outcomes and impact, granting employees unprecedented autonomy over their schedules and locations.

Consequently, the structure of companies will transform. We will see a rise in the “ecosystem model,” where a core organisation is surrounded by a flexible network of freelancers, specialist bots, and project-based teams. The traditional, linear career path will become obsolete, replaced by a “portfolio” model where individuals continuously reskill and pivot between roles, projects, and even industries. Lifelong learning will be non-negotiable, with micro-credentials and nano-degrees offered by corporations and educational platforms becoming the new currency of employability.

This new world is not without its challenges. Societal structures will struggle to keep pace. Governments will grapple with designing social safety nets for a gig-and-project-based economy, and the potential for a sharp digital divide—between those who can work with AI and those whose jobs were replaced by it—will be a critical issue. Companies will face the complex task of building culture and fostering belonging in a dispersed digital landscape.

Ultimately, the world of work in 2034 promises a liberation from mundane tasks, offering a future where human potential is unlocked by technology, not suppressed by it. Success will be defined by our ability to adapt, learn, and harness our uniquely human capabilities in partnership with the machines we create. The workplace will be less a location and more of a dynamic, human-led network focused on innovation and meaning.”*

Hmmm - If you ignore the obvious mistake that this is 2025 so ten years from now is 2035, its an interesting take written by something that obviously has very little contact with real humans!! In some ways it makes me think of Tomorrow’s World when they started to look to the future with its fantastical inventions. Actually maybe AI is a big fan of Star Trek! I think there are enormous opportunities but there needs to be real conversation about how we use this new exciting innovation and the necessary checks and balances. There will be as many people running blindly towards AI without thought of the consequences as well as many who will be standing firmly against it without being prepared to consider the benefits it may bring.

It’s time to talk.
